去る8月、天皇陛下の御譲位のおぼしめしがあったことで、いろいろの方面から意見が出た。渡部先生も早いうちに、WiLL の9月号に寄稿された。「摂政を置いて万世一系を」という見出しがつけられている。Voice の11月号では「摂政がやはり最善」という題名で大変丁寧な文章を書いておられる。言い尽くされていると思う。さらに、2O16.1O.18 の「産経ニュース」で、渡部昇一・上智大学名誉教授の話として次の様に報道された。
「政府の意図は分からないが、有識者会議のメンバーは少なくとも皇室制度の専門家ではなく、期待することはない。現行の皇室典範で摂政を設けることができるのだから、何の問題もない。陛下が摂政を否定されているが、天皇の公務の本質は、宮中で祭事を行い、国と国民の平安を祈ることにある。高齢になっても戦没者慰霊や被災地慰問をなされるのは、ありがたく、尊いお心だが、本質ではない。公務は、摂政である皇太子さまがなさると言われれば、誰も異議は唱えない」
渡部先生は常に「直」の姿勢で意見を述べられる。「直」とは宇野哲人は「是を是と謂い、非を非と謂い、有を有と謂い、無を無と謂う」と説明している。渡部先生はこの問題に限らず、憲法改正についても、「もんじゅ」の廃炉についても核心を明快に示される。そして、後世に禍根を残すようにならないことを願って記述される。 (2O16/1O/23)
